Lest We Drift

A steady watchful eye above the glassy bay
No squall disturbs the mirror of the night,
No sudden tempest tears the dark away
Only with movement, oh so slight.
The rope unfastened leaves the timbers free,
And silence breeds a quiet, sly deceit;
The undercurrents of the sea,
Steal out where dark and open waters meet.
Inch by slow inch the piers recede,
The sheltering arms of safety slip from sight.
No voice cries out, no bell takes heed,
As water trades the safe harbor for the night.
The beacon dwindles to a distant spark,
Memories fade,
While beneath the keel, the water open and dark,
Erases every path the harbor had made.
Take heed the warning echoed through the years,
Be very careful, pay attention to all your heart has known.
Lest unawares, amid untroubled fears,
You drift past grace, unanchored and alone.
It takes no tempest to destroy the soul,
No howling wind to make the loss complete
Just careless rest that abdicates control
And quietly surrenders to defeat.
Yet cast an anchor downward through the veil,
A living hope, immutable and sure,
That holds against the quiet, unseen gale
And keeps the wandering vessel steadfast, pure.
No fickle current steals the grounded heart,
No silent drift can drag the soul away,
Whose chain binds where storms can never start,
Safe in the haven of the eternal day.

“Therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” — Hebrews 2:1
