Beyond the checklist

We live in a culture obsessed with doing. We measure our success by our productivity, our to-do lists, and our daily metrics. Unfortunately, it’s incredibly easy to carry that exact same mindset into our faith.

When we read Jesus’ words in Acts 1:8—“You shall be witnesses to Me”—our minds often jump straight to a checklist of activities. We think of handing out tracts, starting awkward conversations, or perfecting a gospel presentation. We turn “witness” into a verb.

But Jesus didn’t say, “You shall go do witnessing.” He said, “You shall be witnesses.”

There is a massive, life-changing difference between the two.

In the original Greek text, the word Jesus used for witness is martures. It’s where we get our modern word “martyr,” but in the ancient world, it simply meant a legal witness—someone whose testimony or very presence stood as undeniable evidence of a reality.

Jesus wasn’t handing out a job description; He was announcing a identity transformation.

• Doing a witness relies on our own effort, performance, and duty. It’s about passing along information about a distant Christ.

• Being a witness relies on intimacy, connection, and overflow. It’s about revealing a living Christ through the way we live, react, and love.

Think of it this way: a mirror cannot create its own light. If it sits in a dark room, it’s completely useless. But the moment that mirror is turned toward the sun, it automatically reflects that brilliant light into the room. It doesn’t have to strain, stress, or work hard to reflect the light. It just has to stay positioned correctly.

The same is true for us. True witnessing is the natural overflow of a life caught up in intimate unity with Jesus. When we prioritize spending time in His presence, absorbing His truth, and resting in His love, something incredible happens. His nature and character begin to unintentionally “leak” into our daily interactions.

Our lives begin to set forth His character in open view. We don’t have to force ourselves to “act Christian”; our lives simply mirror the One we are looking at.

“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 11:1

When the Apostle Paul wrote those words, it wasn’t out of arrogance. It was out of alignment, (his alignment is with Christ not man). He knew his life was so intertwined with Jesus that if someone copied his footsteps, they would naturally end up closer to Christ.

If you want your life to reveal Jesus in all His fullness, stop focusing so much on the pressure to perform for Him, and start focusing on the privilege of abiding with Him.

.Check your positioning: Are you daily turning your heart toward Him in prayer and the Word, or are you trying to reflect light in your own strength?

• Look for the overflow: Notice how you treat the grocery clerk, how you respond to traffic, or how you handle a stressful work email. Those are the real spaces where your witness is seen.

• Let the Spirit do the heavy lifting: Remember that Jesus promised the power of the Holy Spirit before He said we would be His witnesses. You aren’t doing this alone.

You are not a salesman for God; you are a living exhibit of His grace. Today, let’s stop trying so hard to “do” the work, and simply focus on being with the One who changes everything.
