Modern life frequently forces us to live with our front doors wide open. Between social media, constant notifications, and the casual commentary of the world, we are flooded with other people’s expectations, critiques, and uninvited advice. We feel this immense pressure to share our plans, our goals, and our hearts before they are even fully formed.
It can feel as though if we don’t broadcast what we are doing, it didn’t happen. But constantly inviting the public square into our private thoughts has a cost. It drains the fuel out of our ideas, and it replaces our inner peace with the noisy chaos of a committee we never asked to join.
Lately, I have been leaning deeply into the Book of Proverbs, looking at what ancient wisdom has to say about the power of silence and discretion. Proverbs 2:11 tells us:
“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.”(NIV)
Choosing to close the door to outside opinions isn’t about being cold, nor is it about hiding in fear. It is an act of profound discretion and strength. Discretion acts like a gatekeeper for the soul. When we close the door, we aren’t shutting down; we are simply creating a locked garden. It is a quiet place where our thoughts, our peace, and our steps forward can grow naturally, without being stepped on by someone else’s casual, unearned comment.
There is a sheer, immediate relief that comes when you realize two liberating truths:
- You do not need public validation for a private blessing.
- You do not owe the world an update on what you are working on, thinking, or planning.
When we stop inviting a jury into our daily choices, we reclaim our time, our energy, and our mental clarity. We give our plans room to breathe, our words room to settle, and our spirits a safe harbor to just be.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the noise of the world today, consider this your gentle permission to pull the door shut for a while. Find one area of your life—whether it is a creative dream you are nurturing, a heavy decision you are weighing, or a personal goal you are stepping toward—and keep it close to your chest.
Let it be a quiet, sacred secret between you and your heavenly Father. You might be surprised at how beautifully things can grow when they are kept in the deep, quiet waters of a guarded heart.
